Spartacus (c. 111-71 BC) was a Thracian gladiator known as the leader of escaped slaves in the Third Servile War, who led the great slave uprising against the Roman Republic. Around 75 BC, after being sold to Lentulus Batiatus, he became a gladiator. Two years later, embittered by the inhumane conditions, he became the militant leader of some 3,000 slaves, until his defeat near the city of Petelia.
