Moors in Spain (8th century) gilded chess set

Unique chess set, made of bronze using the lost-wax casting process, finished with genuine 24-karat gold. Each piece is signed by the sculptor. The chessboard is made of onyx and bronze, with a bronze and genuine gold frame. Between the 7th and 8th centuries, the Arab Empire experienced its era of greatest expansion: the conquest of western territories began during the time of the first caliphs, and they succeeded in occupying the entire North Egyptian-Libyan region. After a few years of stagnation, expansion continued in the second half of the 7th century, reaching the Atlantic Ocean. In 711, with the campaign in Spain, the Arabs overthrew the Visigothic Kingdom and from there moved from victory to victory towards Southern Gaul. However, their desire for conquest was stopped at the Battle of Poitiers by Charles Martel, who in 732 thus averted the direct threat of Muslim rule threatening the West.
