Eve, whose name means "life-giver," is the first woman in the world, created as a companion for Adam, and who—according to the account in the Book of Genesis—was born from one of Adam's ribs. Succumbing to the temptation of the devil, who transformed into a serpent, she ate the forbidden fruit from the tree of life, thus becoming the source of original sin that affects all creatures living after her. From her union with the first man, Adam, came Cain, Abel, and later the entire human race.
