The Cycladic culture is a Bronze Age culture that developed mainly on the islands of the Cyclades archipelago in the third and second millennia BC. Its main centers were Syros, Naxos, and Milos. The early artistic development of the culture, up to approx. 1900 BC, is associated with finds of small figures (averaging approx. 0.2-0.5 m high), which were mostly made of marble and are known today as Cycladic idols. Our chess pieces were inspired by such figures. The small figures were placed in graves, thus they were likely associated with funeral rites. Larger figures were presumably placed in places of worship. It is also assumed that at least some of the created figures were depictions of deities.
