What is an engine telegraph
The engine telegraph stood on the ship's bridge: the captain used it to send commands to the engine room – "full steam ahead," "slow astern," "stop." The signal set with the lever appeared on a twin device in the engine room, from where it was acknowledged. This was the connection between the bridge and the engine room before the intercom.
