They were dangerous and powerful men, equipped with special weapons, primarily the gladius (sword) and the "parma," a special rounded shield used by the Roman army, made of iron with a protective boss called an "umbo" in the center. Gladiators were ruthless and always finished off their opponents with a lethal blow.
