Unique chess set, made of bronze using the lost-wax casting process, finished with genuine 24-karat gold. Every piece is signed by the sculptor. The chessboard is crafted from onyx and bronze, featuring a bronze and genuine gold frame. The Habsburgs were a family of Alsatian origin, whose lineage can be traced back to the second half of the 10th century. This family later became significant through the expansion of its estates. Rudolf of Habsburg succeeded Frederick of Swabia as German King, and in 1282 he acquired the Duchy of Austria; however, his heir did not wear the crown, which only returned to the Habsburgs in 1438, when, with Albert II, the imperial dignity passed to the family and remained with them until the mid-18th century. During the Renaissance, they played an extremely prominent role in European politics, and reached the peak of their power during the reign of Emperor Charles V (1519–1556). Maria Theresa, the last member of the family, founded the House of Habsburg-Lorraine through her marriage to Francis Stephen, Duke of Lorraine, which ruled over Austria-Hungary until the Italian victory on November 4, 1918.
