The Middle Ages was the historical period following the fall of the Western Roman Empire, which lasted until the end of the 15th century. Its beginning is traditionally dated to 476 AD, the year Odoacer deposed the last Western emperor, Romulus Augustulus, and its end is linked to 1492, the year of the discovery of America. The Early Middle Ages were characterized by barbarian kingdoms, the founding of the Holy Roman Empire, and the triumph of feudal society; the Late Middle Ages, by contrast, brought the development of free communes, from the crisis of feudalism to the rise of the Italian signoria.
