Charlemagne, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire (800-814) gilded chess set

Unique chess set, made of bronze using the lost-wax casting process, finished with genuine 24-karat gold. Each piece is signed by the sculptor. The chessboard is made of onyx and bronze, with a bronze and genuine gold frame. Pepin the Short, son of the Frankish king, Charles, ascended the throne in 768; at the call of Pope Adrian I, he came to Italy in 773, overthrew the rule of the Lombards, assumed the title of King of the Franks and the Lombards, and donated most of the latter's territory to the Church. Extending his rule over most of Europe and establishing feudal institutions everywhere, he recreated the Western Roman Empire and was crowned emperor by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day. Spreading Christianity, he became the champion of the Church, and his court became a hotbed of culture, from which the most educated men of the age emerged.
