Unique chess set, made of bronze using the lost-wax casting process, finished with genuine 24-karat gold. Each piece bears the sculptor's signature. The chessboard is made of onyx and bronze, with a bronze and genuine gold frame. Peter the Great ascended the Russian throne in 1682, and from his early youth, he was exposed to Western culture through his reading and acquaintances with scholars; he therefore set himself the goal of developing Russia along the lines of European culture, taking study tours in Europe with a particular interest in shipbuilding. The construction of the new capital, St. Petersburg, began, and after his victory over Sweden and the subsequent recognition of his possession of the Baltic territories (1721), he proclaimed himself "Tsar" of all Russia.
