Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte's gilded chess set

Unique chess set, made of bronze using the lost-wax casting process, finished with genuine 24-karat gold. Each piece is signed by the sculptor. The chessboard is made of onyx and bronze, with a bronze and genuine gold frame. Napoleon was promoted to brigadier general in 1794, serving as commander of the artillery of the Army of Italy, and just two years later he received the supreme command of the "Italian campaign". Here, he proved himself a great leader and a skillful negotiator, then became involved in the "Egyptian campaign" against British power. Through the coup d'état (1799), he gained increasing authority and support, and upon being appointed First Consul with dictatorial power, he soon managed to have himself crowned Emperor of the French and King in 1804, and the following year he also took the title of King of Italy. Coalitions against Napoleon became more and more frequent: concern over growing French power intensified. However, the "Russian campaign" proved catastrophic due to the Tsar's persistence, who managed to turn Napoleon's allies against Paris: he was forced to abdicate, renouncing the throne of France and Italy on behalf of himself and his children, and accepting exile on the island of Elba. This extraordinary star, however, did not end his days here, but on Saint Helena, where he was exiled and deported after trying in vain to leverage his strength and his now permanently waning reputation.
