An old Venetian tradition tells of an angel in the form of a winged lion who addressed Saint Mark with the words, "Peace to you, Mark, my evangelist," announcing that his body would rest in the lagoon of Venice. This statue also embodies the power of the Republic of Venice (the Serenissima) and remains the symbol of the Venice Film Festival to this day.
