Louis Comfort Tiffany developed a process in the late 19th century of joining pieces of colored glass with copper foil instead of lead strips—this made delicate, curved patterns possible. Therefore, the shade is not painted, but rather composed of many small, individually colored pieces of glass.

A signature trait of a Tiffany shade is that it is decorative by day, but completely transforms when switched on: the light filtering through the colored glass tints the surrounding surfaces. For a bedside table, reading nook, or chest of drawers.
