How the storm glass works

The crystals in the solution inside the sealed glass react to changes in temperature and atmospheric pressure: a clear liquid indicates fair weather, while flaky or needle-like crystals signal an approaching change in weather. Robert FitzRoy, captain of the HMS Beagle, popularized it in the 19th century - hence its other name, the FitzRoy storm glass.

Not an instrument, but a sight

It does not replace a weather forecast, but it changes from day to day, so it is worth placing it somewhere you pass by every day: on a windowsill, a desk, or a kitchen counter.
