Louis XIV, the Sun King gold-plated chess set, with chessboard, king 11.8 cm

Unique chess set, made of bronze using the lost-wax casting process, finished with genuine 24-karat gold. Each piece is signed by the sculptor. The chessboard is made of onyx and bronze, with a bronze and genuine gold frame. The great "Sun King" began his absolute and personal rule in France in the second half of the 17th century with the assistance of his ministers. The kingdom expanded, acquiring Alsace, Flanders, and Franche-Comté, but Louis XIV's ambitious will also fully manifested in domestic policy: he increasingly centralized the power of the monarchy, persecuted Protestants and Jansenists, and fought for the autonomy of the Gallican Church from the papacy. His name is closely intertwined with the culture of his time, which he encouraged through the founding of academies and the patronage of the arts, not to mention the splendor of the Versailles court. He worked hard enough to make his reputation inseparable from the era in which he lived—which the French rightly call the "century of Louis XIV" or the "great century."
